Veterans Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey—plus newbie Hezly Rivera—are going to Paris!
The Team USA women’s gymnastics roster has been set.
After only 10 minutes of deliberating, the U.S. gymnastics selection committee on Sunday picked the five members of the women’s team who will go to Paris for the 2024 Olympics, which begin July 26. These are veterans Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey—all of whom competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020—plus 16-year-old newbie Hezly Rivera, who won a silver medal on floor at the 2023 Junior World Championships.
Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong—who were both part of the gold medal–winning team at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships—will serve as traveling alternates.
The decision, which USA Gymnastics women’s strategic lead Alicia Sacramone Quinn has described as “cut-and-dry,” came after two nights of competition at the U.S. Olympic trials in Minneapolis—a competition some see as even more stressful than the actual Games.
The five athletes celebrated their achievement as the trials wrapped on Sunday, looking fabulous in matching white ensembles from Sami Miro’s collection with Nike.
Sadly, three top contenders suffered serious injuries while preparing for the trials, immediately making them ineligible for the Olympics. (Gold medalist Skye Blakely injured her Achilles one day before the competition, while training on floor exercise; and Kayla DiCello and Shilese Jones both injured themselves while warming up, just minutes before the competition.)
“Obviously, emotions get tied in, and we all care about these athletes so much, and we’re invested. So that gets hard,” Quinn told USA Today of choosing the Olympic team. “But I think we went by team scenarios and what we saw in the numbers, and it just made sense.”
The trial did feature some positive highlights, as well, including Biles’s powerful floor routine set partly to Taylor Swift’s “…Ready for It?” which has since gone viral. This year’s Olympics will mark the third Games for the celebrated gymnast.
